Alappuzha also known as Alleppy; is one the main tourist hubs of Kerala. Known, for its interesting location with backwaters of Lake Vembanad on one side and Arabian see on the other side. The town of Alleppy is situated on the narrow strip of land between these two huge water bodies. The backwaters of Lake Vembanad, are formed with water from sea coming in and many rivers merging in it. It is now divided with mud barriers of Thanneermukkom, which separate brackish water and sweet water.
This has helped paddy farmers of Kuttanad(rice bowl of Kerala), where farming is done at below sea level. The area around is lush green with coconut orchards and paddy farms. Once you spend few days here you can also plan a tour of Munnar or Thekkady in mountains.
Alleppy back waters are perfect for relaxing. Lots of houseboats are available for 24 hours or more for tour of back waters, where cooks, sailors are on the boat at your service.
All kinds of hotels are available at Alleppy for short or long stay. The place is flooded with backpackers from Europe; who are looking for very cheap accommodation. If you wish to enjoy quality stay then you have options of resorts or homestays. Typically resorts here are very expensive; as compared to which homestays are relatively a better option.
While you stay here do not forget to try local Kerala cuisine, which is very different for other parts of South India, with lot of coconut and spices used. In case you are interested in botany, you would see plants of all kinds of spices in surrounding area, this is spice capital of India and the world.
