Kottayam:
Kottayam is centrally located if you wish to visit Kerala Backwaters. It is closer to Vaikom as well as Kumarakom. The town is small bustling place however surroundings are very green. It is famous for trade of Spices as well as Rubber. In case you plan travel to Kerala, it is worth staying here. If you are on a business tour then also it is worth staying here for few days to enjoy life. It is also cultural centre where you can see Kathakalli and Kalari martial arts, which are a more than 1500 year old traditions.
There are old temples, churches and mosques here with interesting architecture. Thirunakkara Mahadeva temple is Shiva temple built in 16th century in old Kerala Style. The mosque of Thazathangady Juma Masjid is more than 1000 years old and is famous for wooden carvings. It was built by the followers of prophet, who came here on a voyage. The St. Mary's Church, the Valia Palli (the Big Church in Malayalam) was built in 1550 by Syrian Christians who came here from West Asia. This is the oldest church in the town and is famous for murals and glass paintings in Persian style. There are two big granite crosses known as Persian crosses, which are also famous.
Kumarakom:
Kumarakom is famous for its back waters. It is situated towards eastern coast of Lake Vembanad, whereas Alappuzha is on the western coast. It is a village with lots of greenery and is ideal for relaxation. Houseboats are available here for overnight stay in the lake. If you want peace and privacy then this is the recommended place.
There are resorts in Kumarakom, which are very expensive as compared to the Homestays with natural greenery around. So Homestays are the better option. It would also give you opportunity to taste authentic Keralite cuisine.
