Janjira the
impregnebal fort captured by Siddhis from Earlier King Rajaram
Koli(Chief of Fisherman Community) in 1118 A.D. There was no possibility
of capturing the fort in head on fight and hence it was captured by
deceit. Apparently the king and all the guys on fort were first made
friends and then in a night were offered best quality liquor; the
inebriated force could not fight and lost the fort to their friends
turned enemies Once the fort was under the command of Siddhis, they
reconstructed it. It took 22 years to complete the fort; which is spread
over 22 acres with 22 buruz (word for Outpost in Marathi, the local
language).
The construction was done with
mortar made of jaggery, lime and molten lead(which does not rust even in
saline water). The construction is so strong that after hundreds of
years of facing rough sea waves; the stones have eroded but the mortar
is still intact. What makes this fort impregnable is the presence of
rocks in sea around it. Thus big ships could not reach and small ships
were just not enough. Even a long siege would not be successful as there
was plenty of fresh water with 2 big lakes and huge food storage. Once
you enter you would see emblem of Siddhis on the top of the main gate,
with a lion and 6 elephants under him; each elephant representing each
district of their empire. Immediately after entering you would see tomb
of Paanch Peer on your right hand side. Siddhis revered these saints and
believed them to be spiritual guides. There are two big lakes which were
built for fresh water storage. Apparently these lakes also had glass
houses attached for women in the royalty to enjoy.
There are ruins of a mosque and Darbar (court) near these
lakes. From the high point where there is a flag post you can get
beautiful view of surrounding area, including Rajpuri Village and
Padmadurg fort. While you take a stroll around watch towers, do not miss
to see three Giant Cannons namely Chavdi(Range 8 km), Goumukh(Range 10
km) and the biggest Kalal Bangdi (range 12 km) kept near each other.
Goumukh(mouth of a cow) was named so due to shape given at the other
end. Kalal bangdi was named so as it had bangles hung around it; and
when it fired it they sounded like ones in lady's hands. The cannons
are made of alloy and are very heavy because of which you would find
them cold upon touching even in the middle of a summer noon. Maratha
King Sambhaji, was hell bent of capturing this fort. When repeated
attempts failed, he started building Padmadurg on big rock towards
northern side sea of Janjira. However before the fort could get
completed he got engaged in fight in other parts and subsequently died.
Padmadurg thus remained half complete. Besides main gate there are two
more small gates to the fort which were used regularly. While you go to
the fort do not forget carry water bottles.
